"MINERS MEMORIAL WALK WINS PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD"

The Charters Towers Miners Memorial Walk has won the People’s Choice Award at the AIA North Queensland Awards.

The memorial walk features a stunning glass floor that allows visitors to walk directly over a historic mine shaft—offering a unique and reflective experience that connects past to present.

One of the walk’s standout elements is its distinctive shade structures, inspired by the iconic ‘poppet heads’ that once towered over Charters Towers during the gold rush. These structures, historically used to support pulley systems for deep shaft mining, now serve as symbolic markers honouring the thousands who worked—and often lost their lives—in the mines below.

This thoughtfully crafted space has resonated deeply with the community and visitors alike, making the People’s Choice win a fitting tribute to the miners' legacy.
