Major industries

what powers charters towers

Charters Towers thrives on the strength of its major industries - agriculture, mining, and education - all of which play a vital role in shaping the local economy and community.

Our rich grazing lands support a strong beef cattle industry, while mining, with a proud gold-mining history, continues to contribute significantly to regional employment and growth. The city is also a well-known education hub, attracting students from across Australia to its reputable schools.

Together, these industries create a dynamic and resilient community, supporting local jobs and preserving the town's proud heritage.

mining

Charters Towers is born from gold mining, and in 2022 is celebrating 150 years since the goldfields were established here.

Since the beginning, gold mining has remained a strong economic pillar for the region with today's gold prices creating a mining resurgence.

agriculture

Charters Towers is a key agricultural hub in Queensland, primarily known for its robust cattle industry.

Centered around the Dalrymple Saleyards - one of North Queensland’s busiest livestock facilities - the region supports both breeding and fattening operations across large-scale enterprises and smaller rural properties. The saleyards handle over 246,000 head of cattle annually, facilitating local sales and live exports, particularly to Indonesia.

With research from the nearby Spyglass Beef Research Facility and events like the Northern Beef Producers Expo, the region continues to innovate and expand in sustainable beef production.
